This work aims at contributing to the detection and rehabilitation of stroke, by focusing on modelling and experimental components of efficient and deficient postural behaviour. Stroke has many deficient consequences at cognitive and sensorimotor levels, which may be modelled, diagnosed, and may orient adequate rehabilitation programs.

Specifically, this research aims at achieving a computational modelling of the coordination and control of human posture as a tool for quantitative analysis and diagnosis of movement disorders induced by stroke. Postural coordination and control is one emblematic function of human agents in daily life that exhibits well-known neurophysiological and behavioural regularities. The (ir-)regularities in postural behaviour produced by hemiplegia are less known, even if a large amount of work has been devoted to hemiplegic posture during the last three decades or so.

Title : Prolonged Functional Balanced Standing in paraplegic patient

The standing posture in paraplegic patient can be obtained by knee joint locking. Different approaches are possible: verticalizing wheelchairs, orthosis, Vanini boots, functional electrical stimulation (FES).

Orthoses and Vanini boots allow to lock the knee and the ankles and in some cases to free one or two hand. A visual feedback is necessary for the patient to ensure his vertical alignment.

  • PhD (September 2009-August 2012): Numerical aspects of polynomial optimization for systems control, supervised by D. Henrion and J. B. Lasserre.

The project lies on the boundary of several branches of applied mathematics: numerical analysis (stability of algorithms, linear algebra), real algebraic geometry (polynomial equations and inequalities) , functional analysis (theory of moments), mathematical programming (convex optimization over the cone of positive semidefinite matrices), with systems control engineering applications (automatic control, linear and nonlinear dynamical systems). At the end of the project the candidate should be able to solve numerically some difficult problems like fixed-order robust controller design. A good background in applied mathematics is required (numerical analysis, functional analysis, mathematical programming) , as well as a good knowledge of the scientific computing package Matlab. Some knowledge of systems control is welcome.
