The Graduate School of Excellence “MAterials Science IN MainZ” (MAINZ) is an international PhD programme which focuses on graduate training through excellence in research in the combined fields of polymer science, colloids, supramolecular assemblies, magnetoelectronics and strongly correlated quantum systems, including ultracold quantum gases.
Scientists from the University of Mainz, the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) and the University of Kaiserslautern (TUKL) have joined to form MAINZ. MAINZ has been selected as one of the few PhD programmes in the interdisciplinary area of Chemistry, Physics and Biology as part of the Excellence Initiative.

The objective of the doctoral programs at the graduate school to provide top-class research training. The standardized structure of the doctoral programs at each of the centers of the GESS makes it possible for students and faculty to compare, interact, and collaborate across the three centers. Furthermore, it accounts for the fact that often top research in one field is inspired by developments in neighboring ones. The figure below provides an overview of the time-structure of the research training at the graduate school.

The IMPRS for Neural Circuits was recently funded by the Max Planck Society and offers ten positions for talented students holding a relevant Master´s or Bachelor´s degree to perform research resulting in a PhD. It also includes a tailor-made educational program including neuroscience courses (topics and techniques), transferable skills, rotations and exchange programs.
The deadline for applications (including the letters of recommendation) is March 15, 2011!
