This PhD research project on Real-Time In-situ Quality Evaluation of Asphalt Pavements During Installation (RIQE) aims at contributing to the development and evaluation of simple and fast real-time on-site quality control tools and methodologies for assessing and quantifying the effectiveness of the construction process in terms of characteristic mechanical and spacial properties of the pavement in its virgin state during and immediately after compaction.

Theoretical and experimental investigation of fresh mixture phenomena will be performed in the lab and in situ under real paving and compaction conditions. This means characterization and understanding of chemo-physical mechanisms during construction of asphalt pavements, focusing also on bonding, early damage and overstressing effects. The findings of the research are expected to result in proposals and, if feasible, in developments and validation of simple and fast real-time on-site quality control tools.

  • The Department of Materials and Manufacturing Technology consists of six research groups and has a total staff of around 60 persons. The research activities span from basic research on nanostructural materials to product- and process related issues within materials and manufacturing technology.

The research is carried out in close collaboration with national and international industries and universities. Our graduate as well as undergraduate education is organized in a wide range of courses, we are involved in three masters’ programmes and three graduate schools.

  • The Photonics Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2), with about 25 members, conducts application oriented research in the areas of optoelectronics and fibre optics, directed primarily towards the development of new material, device and system technologies for optical communication, measurements and sensing.

We have been working on fiber optic parametric amplifiers (FOPA) and their applications since the late 1990s and were the first group in the world to demonstrate net gain in continuous operation in the year 2000. FOPAs are unique in many ways when comparing with other types of amplifiers as they react almost instantaneously; can reach 0-dB noise figure; and generate a phase-conjugated idler wave at a new frequency suitable for performing a variety of functions. The key components of an FOPA are the high power, single wavelength laser that serves as an optical pump, and a specifically tailored highly nonlinear, low dispersion optical fiber. FOPAs have a variety of applications such as: all-optical ultrafast sampling, time-division demultiplexing, pulse generation, wavelength & format conversion, signal regeneration, and tunable filters.
