The King’s College London Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care is funding up to three PhD students, providing exciting opportunities for graduates in the social, behavioural and applied sciences, with an interest in healthcare research, to work towards a PhD.

Information about the application

We are seeking to appoint PhD students with an interest in developing a proposal based on one of the following departmental research areas:

  • Development and evaluation of quality indicators for the management of common gastrointestinal disorders utilising computer decision support (Professor Roger Jones);
  • Ethnic dimensions of health and illness, including work on ethnicity and mental health, organ donation and bowel cancer screening (Professor Roger Jones);
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including projects on pulmonary rehabilitation, palliative care, medical interventions and quality of prescribing (Dr Patrick White);
  • Quality in primary care, involving the analysis of a unique database containing quality indicators and practice and demographic variables for all general practices in England (Dr Mark Ashworth);
  • Changing technology in general practice, practice culture and the relationship between the objective severity of disease and its subjective experience (Professor David Armstrong).

Eligibility criteria

  • Open to the following nationalities: United Kingdom
  • Open to full-time PhD students paying tuition fees at the Home/EU rate. We are seeking to appoint PhD students with an interest in developing a proposal based on one of the departmental research areas listed below.
  • Applicable subjects: Medicine and health related studies

Value of award

The award will provide PhD fees (home student) and a maintenance grant of £19,300 per annum (full time), which is exempt from tax and NI, for three years.
