The Ph.D. researcher will collaborate with Dr. Paul Vogt on the project ‘Cultural and social aspects of multimodal interaction in language acquisition (CASA MILA)’. This project is concerned with the relation between joint attentional usage and infants’ first language acquisition. The project consists of roughly two phases:

  1. The collection of quantitative data on joint attention and multimodal interactions between caregivers and infants (9-24 months old) during field trips to Mozambique and the Netherlands.
  2. The incorporation of these data in computer simulations on language evolution.

  • Microbial Ecology Research Group

    The research group Microbial Ecology is part of the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies (CEES) in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen. The group studies the adaptive strategies of prokaryotic microorganisms that allow these to survive in complex natural habitats. One of the topics focuses on the role of microbial diversity in ecosystem functioning. The research is strongly multidisciplinary and includes microbiology, ecology, molecular biology and plant physiology and ecology. The group provides a lively and internationally oriented scientific environment with excellent facilities.

  • The PhD student wil take part in a project that aims to identify genes that determine the response to anti-TNF treatment in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This project is part of a collaboration between the department of Human Genetics and the department of Rheumatology.

    • Uses and designs diverse molecular and statistical approaches for gene identification
    • Works in a team with other scientists and will supervise undergraduate students
    • The project will be completed with a dissertation
