Vacancies for 10 PhD positions
Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany. DFG – Research Training Group 1462 as of June 2011 / TV- L 13 E, max. 3 years

The research training group “Evaluation of Coupled Numerical Partial Models in Structural Engineering” is offering 10 positions for doctoral students for its second project phase. We are looking for inspired and dedicated individuals who are interested in doing research work in the multi-faceted field of structural engineering.

The overall aim of the Research training group is to assess the reliability, safety and robustness of numerical models. This evaluation considers a wide range of aspects and models. This includes, but is not restricted to, models that describe loads or the material and structural behavior of systems in structural engineering. Of particular interest are the interactions of these models in complex systems. Their influence on the quality of models of complex coupled systems is to be determined.

  • The Graduate School of Excellence “MAterials Science IN MainZ” (MAINZ) is an international PhD programme which focuses on graduate training through excellence in research in the combined fields of polymer science, colloids, supramolecular assemblies, magnetoelectronics and strongly correlated quantum systems, including ultracold quantum gases.

Scientists from the University of Mainz, the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) and the University of Kaiserslautern (TUKL) have joined to form MAINZ. MAINZ has been selected as one of the few PhD programmes in the interdisciplinary area of Chemistry, Physics and Biology as part of the Excellence Initiative.

  • PhD Position in Glass-Forming Biocompatible Ti-Based Materials at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in Spain

The objective of this project is to tailor amorphous / glassy Ti-alloys containing neither toxic nor allergic additions and to understand the correlation between chemistry, glassy structure and mechanical response (elastic & plastic behavior). The project will make use of two processing options: controlled solidification (different casting methods, cooling rates ranging between 103-106 ºC/s) and powder metallurgy. Tasks: a) synthesis of glassy materials (different processing routes); b) in-depth structural characterisation (XRD, electron microscopy); c) glassy phase thermal stability and crystallization kinetics (using DSC, DTA, TGA); d) Net-shape processing – thermoplastic forming in supercooled liquid region; e) elastic and plastic deformation behavior (nanoidentation, ultrasonic measurements, mechanical tests etc); f) finite element simulations of the mechanical behaviour.

  • The BioInterfaces International Graduate School (BIF-IGS) provides the recruitment and training platform for the BioInterfaces Research Progamme at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany.
The BioInterfaces Programme brings together biologists, chemists, physicists, IT specialists, engineers, and material scientists with the common goal of controlling living systems, and bridges the gap between fundamental research and development of application-oriented technologies and products. The programme is tightly linked with the Universities of Karlsruhe and Heidelberg. In addition to offering the right of graduation, both Universities contribute scientifically to the BioInterfaces research school. While the University of Karlsruhe is more technically oriented, the University of Heidelberg has an emphasis on biomedical research and basic physics of surface interactions and microscopy.
