Strong leadership of teaching can produce positive learning environments for students and staff, leading to enhanced student learning. Previous research has identified distinctive characteristics of leadership of teaching in those departments that are the most successful at teaching, such as development and maintenance of a ‘collegial culture’.

Proposals are welcomed on the theme of ‘leadership in learning and teaching’, focusing on topics such as: comparative study of the leadership practices in research-intensive and teaching-focused departments; identifying the role leadership has played, if any, in the creation of outstanding learning and teaching environments; and investigating ways to develop leadership of teaching at department and programme level as a means to enhance learning environments for students.
